Water Does It, Not Dirt

Dry soil leans on a wall every day, and a wall is built to take that lean. Water rewrites the arithmetic. Soaked soil adds its own pressure on top of the earth pressure, and the total is hydrostatic pressure. That total is why most residential walls tip, belly, or come down. A wall that fails in a wet spring did not weaken. The load grew.

Frost Is the Northern Load

Wisconsin puts footings below the frost line, and frost in Brown County reaches about four feet. That is deeper than most residential retaining walls are tall. Water held in the soil behind a wall freezes, expands, and shoves. Then it thaws and the wall stays where the ice left it. A proper wall begins in a trench below grade. Compact the subgrade, add angular gravel, compact that, then level it. A Leaned Wall Does Not Go Back

The trade dodges this question, so here it is. Units that moved also gave up their alignment, usually their base, and whatever stone they had. Force the face upright and every cause stays exactly where it was. Here is what is true. A single section with a small lean over a sound base can be taken down and reset. A run that rotated hard, bellied in the middle, or dropped at the bottom is a rebuild, partial or full. You get told which one you own, and why.

The Same Four Shortcuts

They repeat on every cheap wall. Nothing but clay behind the block and no outlet. Gravel that never got compacted. A bottom course resting on top of the ground. Bare courses on a wall tall enough to want grid. One of them will take a wall down eventually. All four take it down quickly.

Load Added Later

Anything resting on the ground above a wall is a surcharge. A driveway, a parking pad, a pool, a shed, a slope, or another wall higher up the hill. Every one of them adds weight the wall has to hold. Ask before the pad goes in above an old wall, not afterward.

One boundary, stated plainly: if the wall that worries you is the one your basement is built out of, that is a foundation contractor's job and not ours.

Can a leaning retaining wall be repaired?

Not by forcing it upright, and that is the straight answer. A wall that leaned gave up its alignment and usually its base at the same time. Shoving the face back leaves the cause untouched behind it. One section with a slight lean over a sound base gets taken down and reset. A run that bellied, rotated, or settled at the bottom needs a rebuild, either that bay or all of it.

Is it possible to replace a retaining wall?
